Just one little victory…

The most difficult part of beginning and continuing transformative work is getting started. The most motivated and capable of us can procrastinate endlessly often with clearly defined goals in mind.

Therein lies the problem.

Goals are important. So are dreams. So are aspirations.

However, goals, dreams, and aspirations tell us nothing about how to actualize them.

I constantly paint beautiful pictures in my mind of what life will look like when my project begins to develop; my work is making an impact on other people; I am getting interviewed on Jimmy Fallon; contributing to my niece and nephews’ college fund and “look it’s four o’clock I’m going to take the dog for a walk before dinner.”

Dwelling in the future can be as distracting and almost as destructive as dwelling in the past. Work takes place in the present.

Hold tight to your dreams, goals, and aspirations; but do not dwell in them for they will betray you.

Do not imagine the top of the mountain … go to the trailhead.

Do not want to be kinder to a loved one … call/text/tell them you love them now.

Do not think about the third act … write the first line.

Do not aspire to be sober … don’t drink today.

Do not dream about winning the race … tie your shoes.

Do not pitch your wild ideas to anyone who’ll listen … write the first blog post on your website.

You will not be disappointed. One little victory is all it takes and you are off.

“Celebrate the moment as it turns into one more

Another chance at victory, another chance to score

The measure of the moment is a difference of degrees

Just one little victory, a spirit breaking free

One little victory

The greatest act can be”

-Neil Peart
